Visiting Arts Instructor

Regalia Making Series

Over two, four-hour workshops, I taught 10 participants basic sewing and drafting techniques for creating their dancing regalia. Assisted younger participants with the “anatomy” of a sewing machine, so by the end of the first session, they were able to successfully thread, adjust tension, and run a sewing machine with little assistance.

Green Olive Arts, Tetouan, Morocco

Visiting Arts Instructor

Dentalium Earring Workshop, January 2024

After providing an overview of the history of Dentalium shells as a significant cultural material for adornment for many Indigenous Tribes and as a symbol of wealth, I demonstrated how to make two-tier Plains-style dentalium earrings. With the assistance from Rachel—director of Green Olive Arts—the students learned how to safely sand the shells down and assemble their earrings with the shells and beads.

Team Time, October 2022

I have hosted several team times surrounding the arts and applied theater. One example of an applied theater team time was in October 2022, when I facilitated an Indigenous Identity workshop for AKSoC apprentices and staff. Throughout this workshop, I had participants become “spect-actors” and we would move our bodies to various identity-based prompts. There were journalling prompts and conversations throughout the workshop and writing poetry was encouraged, but not mandatory for participation.

Stickleback Build Day, July 2022

During Stickleback Build Days, one of the tasks was beautifying the old Alaska Native Medical Center site off 3rd and Ingra. To engage the more artistic Alaska Seeds of Change apprentices, youth staff, and volunteers, I proposed to my manager that we paint the fish totes on the site.

For the two build days in July 2022, I manned the painting station to make sure none of the more enthusiastic painters mixed paint colors directly in the buckets and would occasionally join a solo youth at their fish tote. What we were left with at the end of July was an array of colorful, abstract totes. Unfortunately, we were unable to complete our Stickleback beautification due to the site becoming unsafe earlier this year. Regardless, my partner's niece (who participated in the paintings) still talks about the events to this day.

The Nave, Anchorage, Alaska

Art Instructor Assistant

Art Camp, June 2022

Assisted esteemed artist and curator Melissa Shaginoff during Art Camp 2022 where we engaged over 40 youths from throughout Anchorage. Throughout the week, we de-haired caribou hide, processed berries to create natural paints, and strung beaded necklaces.
